Our Don Pratelli Extra Virgin Olive Oil was born on the spectacular hills of Trabia, Sicily.

On the Tyrrhenian sea coast not far from the province of Palermo, stand the centuries-old olive trees that grow 200 meters above the sea level.

Harvesting Techniques

Our olives are harvested between October and November when the quantity of polyphenols is at it's greatest.

The harvest takes place initially using a modern technique, that uses machines called mechanical harvesters, that shake the branches. Then, a traditional method is used which consists of manual harvesting with the use of a stick, which by beating the branches, allows the olives to fall on special tents.

After the initial harvesting, our olives are carefully selected by hand to guarantee that our olive oil is of the highest quality possible. We take pride in our meticulous process to ensure that every drop of oil is rich, flavorful, and authentic.

High Quality Virgin olive oil is produced by immediately transporting the olives to the mill. The olives are pressed within 24 hours from their collection to obtain a better result. The pressing is carried out at a cold temperature to preserve the beneficial qualities of the oil. This gives the oil a 100% organic certification.

The History of Sicilian olive oil: where legends meet

Olive oil is part of Sicilian history, a piece of memory whose origins have been lost in the meanders of time.

In the sun-soaked lands of Sicily, the story of olive cultivation unfolds across the ages, weaving together legends and historical accounts that have shaped the island's rich heritage.

Centuries ago, even before the rise of the ancient Greeks, whispers echo of the Phoenicians' footsteps along Sicily's eastern shores. Legend speaks of these early cultivators, who, with care and skill, began the art of cultivating olives, sowing the seeds of an enduring legacy.

As time danced onward, around the 8th century BC, the Greek influence swept across the Sicilian landscape. With them, the Greeks brought not only their culture but also the sacred reverence for the olive tree. The Siceliotes, Greeks who settled in Sicily's poleis, held the olive tree in such esteem that the mere thought of eradicating it was deemed a crime punishable by exile.

Stories intertwine with historical records, mentioning the likes of Diodorus Siculus, who, between the 4th and 8th centuries BC, embarked on the grand plantation of olive orchards, a testament to the enduring relationship between Sicily and its beloved olive trees.

Through flourishing eras marked by the Romans, Arabs, and Normans, the art of olive cultivation thrived. Advancements and expansions graced the fields, shaping techniques and traditions that echoed through generations.

Amidst these tales of history, one legend stands tall—the myth of Athena and the Olive Tree. A fabled contest between Athena, the goddess of wisdom and warfare, and Poseidon, the god of the sea, birthed the first olive tree in the city later named Athens. Athena's gift of the olive tree, providing sustenance, oil, wood, and shade, earned her the city's patronage, turning the olive into a symbol of peace, prosperity, and wisdom.

These intertwined tales of mythology and history form the tapestry of Sicily's relationship with the olive tree. From its mythical origins to the historical accounts and cultural practices that echo through the ages, the olive's legacy in Sicily remains rooted deep within the island's soil and soul.

Sicily is renowned for its abundance of high-quality food and wine, rich spices, and fragrant perfumes that enhance the flavor and value of the region's products. Among these, the extra virgin olive oil stands out, with its intense taste and unmistakable aroma, and is a vital ingredient in almost all traditional Sicilian dishes.
